QLD:Qld supports NZ apple imports

Queensland isn't likely to follow a Tasmanian push to uphold a ban on New Zealand apple imports.

The federal government cleared the way on August 17 for New Zealand to export apples
to Australia, lifting a ban imposed in 1919 because of a fear of fire blight disease.

Tasmania is pushing to keep its own barriers in place and is exploring the powers it
has to protect its biosecurity.

But Agriculture Minister TIM MULHERIN says he believes Australians will support the
local industry and Queensland isn't likely to protest the imports.
