Fed: New vehicle registrations surge 55.2 pc in July

CANBERRA, Aug 25 AAP - There were more new cars sold last month than ever before, with
new vehicle registrations surging 55.2 per cent as buyers made the most of price falls
under the GST.

The rise, the biggest monthly increase on record, was driven by a 77.2 per cent leap
in passenger car registrations, with a record 68,570 new cars registered.

New car registrations were up 32.4 per cent on the previous year, seasonally adjusted,
after a pre-GST buyers' strike kept sales frozen in the lead-up to the GST.

But the Australian Bureau of Statistics said registrations for commercial and other
vehicles were at their lowest level since November 1997, dropping 19.9 per cent last month.
