WA: US adventurer in good health, say police
PERTH, Aug 23 AAP - A US adventurer found today after a month wandering in Western
Australia's Great Sandy Desert would remain in hospital overnight, police said today.
Sergeant Eddie Clouter from Broome police said Robert Bogucki, 33, was in good physical and
mental condition but would remain at Broome District Hospital overnight for observation.
"He's fine, a bit dehydrated, but that's about all," Sgt Clouter said.
"He's got a few scratches on him, as you would expect, and obviously he's tired.
"But for someone whose been wandering around the desert for that long, he's doing
pretty well."
Mr Bogucki was spotted by a helicopter pilot just before 9am walking along a dry creek
bed in the Edgar Ranges, about 180km south east of Broome.
Sgt Clouter said police had had a brief talk with Mr Bogucki, but would conduct a more
intensive interview at the hospital this afternoon.
An intensive police search began for Mr Bogucki, an Alaskan volunteer fireman, after his
bike and camping equipment were found abandoned on the Pegasus Track at the start of the Great
Sandy Desert on July 26.
The search was later abandoned, but an American specialist search and rescue team last
Thursday began a new bid to find Mr Bogucki. They used sniffer dogs.
Last week searchers found his footprints and yesterday they found an abandoned campsite on
the edge of the Edgar Ranges.
